Welcome to Dynamic Diabetics!

Welcome to Dynamic Diabetics! I am so excited for you to meet some amazing kids!

You are about to meet some amazing, energizing, happy, smart, adventurous, sweet, and courageous kids.  Each one of them have been diagnosed with Juvenile Type 1 Diabetes.  Their lives have been forever changed, but that doesn’t stop them from spreading their infectious smiles.  This blog is designed to showcase how amazing they are and how much they are like you and me!  Let me tell you a little how this all got started.

I myself, am a Juvenile Type 1 Diabetic.  I was diagnosed at the young age of 5.  I remember to this day the first class treatment for a week I received in the hospital.  Nurses coming and going, fingers being pricked, shots being given and my diet totally changing. My mom would stay overnight with me while my dad would go home so he could sleep and get ready for work the next day.

Growing up, I remember feeling different than my friends. When it was recess time, I would have to go to the nurse’s office to have my blood tested while my friends all went out to play. Many days I would wake up not feeling very good and I knew why. My blood sugars were out of control.  I hated having diabetes. I was different. I would even try to ignore the fact I was diabetic.  It wasn’t until I met my husband that my feelings about being diabetic began to change.

About three weeks into dating my husband. I felt I had to have the dreaded phone call. The phone call that told him my darkest secret.  Here’s a little sum up of how it went down:

Me: “Hey Jeff… there is something I have to tell you.”

Jeff: “okaayyyyy..... " (insert worry that I was breaking up with him)

Me: “I am a diabetic.”

Jeff: (breath of relief from no break-up) “Ok. And?”

Me: “Wait. That doesn’t bother you?”

Jeff:  “If diabetes makes you who you are. Then I love that you have it.”

Me: Heart officially melted.

Seriously though, that’s when my thinking began to change. Maybe I needed to start thinking of myself differently. He went on to tell me, that because of diabetes I was able to empathize with others. I was able to handle life’s challenges better. All around, it made me who I was. It was an ah-ha moment that I wanted to share with those that are going through the same thing I went through as a kid.  As the owner of Shawna Pearce Photography, I knew that I had the resources to make it happen.  Through images portraying life as a diabetic and images of them showcasing who they are. We are showing others how we can take this adversity in our lives and show how strong we are. At the same time, we can educate others that it’s okay that we are diabetic and we are still amazing despite it!

So, without further adieu, enjoy meeting these amazing kids! I promise, you will be leaving with a smile on your face.
